    - metaphyseal portion of long bone contains numerous small channels;
    - thru these channels pass vessels that enter marrow cavity to anastomose
            w/ vessels derived from nutrient artery;
    - majority of these metaphyseal channels, however, contain veins that
            permit egress of blood from the narrow cavity;
